MaKiN’ iT riGht is an honest and insightful look into the lives of four young people and their experiences while their families were involved with the court system. Producer and interviewer Michele Unsworth, M.Ed., LCPC, brings more than 20 years experience working with families into the development of this presentation. It is a cautionary tale, that shows both the power and the risks of involving the child in family court.

Some of the lessons we learn are:
- Including the “child’s voice” in ADR or court process is powerful. Used properly, it may help the child (and the process). Used improperly, it may further damage the child and the process.
- Honest, clear, age appropriate (understandable) disclosure to the child as to the role of the interviewer is critical regarding reporting the child’s “wishes” as in the voice of the child or making recommendations to the court as to the child’s “best interest.
- Don’t make promises you don’t intend or may not be able to keep. “I will be your voice in court.” Or “What’s said in this room stays in this room.” “I won’t tell anyone what you tell me.
- Don’t force a child to choose between parents. Their choice may be clearly stated or it may naturally arise but don’t push for a choice….ever.
- And more!
